Israel Reportedly Ready to Return Golan Heights to Syria
In an effort to reestablish peace Israel has reportedly offered to return the Golan Heights to Syria.
Israel seized the Golan Heights in 1967 and Syria has long affirmed that there would be no peace with their neighbors until the land was returned. On Wednesday a report from Syrian media outlet al-Watan indicated that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert had told Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan they would be willing to return the Golan Heights to Syria in exchange for peace.
Syria has long held that peace could only be established if the territory was returned. For their part, Israel has said they would only resume peace talks if Syria abandoned its support for Lebanese and Palestinian militant groups.
Ehud has refused to comment on the recent reports.
Peace talks between Israel and Syria broke down in 2000.
