Dutch and Danish Embassies in Afghanistan Evacuated Due to Threats

The Dutch and Danish governments have elected to evacuate their embassies in Kabul, Afghanistan in response to recent threats that were reportedly targeting the two.

Protests throughout Muslim countries have taken exception to two separate incidents involving the Dutch and Danish people.

Dutch politician Geert Wilders produced a short film titled Fitna that explored the link between terrorism and Islam. The film sparked outrage in Muslim countries as well as the international community.

In 2006 a Danish newspaper ran a cartoon of Muhammad with a bomb in his turban. That cartoon, one of the original dozen, was later reprinted following the revelation that there had been a plot to kill one of the cartoonists.

The decision to evacuate the embassies was made after Danish intelligence officials determined “We have new information and we have to take that into serious consideration. We decided it would be better to move our staff, although the embassies are up and running.”
