Violinist Reunited with $4M Stradivarius Left In Back of N.J. Cab

Grammy-nominated violinist Philippe Quint left a $4 million violin in the back of a cab. And it wasn’t even his.

The 1723 Stradivarius “Ex-Keisewetter” was on loan to the star violinist, who defected from the Soviet Union in 1991. Quint, 34, had just returned from a performance in Dallas, and left the instrument in the back of a taxi after paying his fare from the airport.

The violin remained in the cab, owned by Mohamed Khalil, and was parked overnight on a Newark street. Khalil found the instrument the next day after Newark's Taxi Commission alerted cab drivers to look out for the missing Stradivarius.

When reunited with the 285-year old violin, Quint collapsed to the ground and wept.
