U.S. Will Pursue Third Trial in Alleged Sears Tower Plot

After two attempts ended in deadlocked juries, federal prosecutors announced Wednesday they will try for a third time to convict the six men accused in the plot to take down the Sears Tower in Chicago and bomb several FBI offices.

U.S. District Judge Joan Lenard declared a mistrial last week in the second trial when jurors failed to agree on any verdicts. The first trial ended in an acquittal for one of the “Liberty City Seven” defendants, but the jury was again deadlocked on any other verdicts.

A date for the third trial has not been announced.

The six accused in the Sears Tower plot face up to 70 years in prison if convicted on the four terrorism-related conspiracy charges. The men have been in custody since their arrests in June 2006, and defense attorneys plan to seek bail.
