462 Children in Custody After Texas Officials Find Another 25 Moms From Polygamist Sect Are Under 18

Since a state raid three weeks ago on a polygamist sect in Texas, the number of children taken into custody has risen to 462. Officials discovered Thursday that another 25 moms from the compound are under 18.

According to Child Protective Services spokesman Darrell Azar, the girls originally claimed to be adults, and had been staying voluntarily with their children at a shelter in the San Angelo Coliseum.

The official number of children taken from the polygamist sect of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has been steadily rising as authorities find some of the mothers are actually under the age of 18.

Many of the children have been bused to foster facilities. About 260 remain at the coliseum.
