EA Sports announces Friday that Brett Favre will grace the cover of their upcoming Madden NFL 09 video game.
Favre, the recently retired Green Bay Packers quarterback, will change the tradition of the Madden NFL 09 game by being the first non-current player to grace the cover. The decision was made to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the inception of the Madden franchise.
"Brett Favre is a perfect fit for the Madden NFL 09 cover, as he epitomizes everything the franchise has stood for the past 20 years - longevity, excellence, and a love of football," said Madden NFL 09's executive producer Dale Jackson.
Favre is the only three-time MVP in league history and finished his 17-year career as the NFL's all-time leader in touchdowns, completions, attempts, yards and wins.
Madden NFL 09 will be available in retail stores in North America on August 12, including a special collector's edition in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the game. The Madden NFL 09 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition will be feature full versions of both Madden NFL 09 and the all-new NFL Head Coach 09, exclusive classic Madden NFL gameplay, and an extensive library of exclusive bonus video content.
Madden NFL 09 will be available for the Xbox 360, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii, NDS and PSP. NFL Head Coach 09 is scheduled to ship as a part of the Madden NFL 09 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition, which, at a suggested retail price of $89.99 for the complete package of Madden NFL 09 and NFL Head Coach 09 plus additional exclusive bonus content, will ship on the Xbox 360 and PS3.
The infamous "Madden Curse" has been thwarted, at least for a year, with Favre gracing the cover since he is already retired. The "Madden Curse" is the lore based around the Madden cover as several players who have graced the cover have suffered injuries and/or bad seasons during the year they are on the cover.
