A man was killed Friday in a shark attack off Solana Beach in San Diego as he trained in the ocean with a group of triathletes.
The man, who was unidentified, was swimming with others at Tide Beach around 7 a.m. when he was attacked, according to a report on the Solana Beach city website.
The man, who was between 55 and 60 years old, was taken to a lifeguard station for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead at the scene, just an hour after the attack.
His legs were severed from the knees down as his group members attempted to rescue him from the shores of Solana Beach, which is 14 miles northwest of San Diego.
Swimmers were ordered out of the water for a 17-mile stretch around the attack site and San Diego County authorities sent up helicopters to scan the waters for the shark.
"The shark is still in the area. We're sure of that," Solana Beach Mayor Joe Kellejian told the Associated Press.
