The 2010 Northern Michigan Advances in Multidisciplinary Management of Cancer Course, organized by Drs. Michael S Sabel and Pierre Lavalard, will take place from July 9-11, 2010 at the Boyne Grand Lodge in Boyne, MI. The course offers practicing physicians the opportunity to update their knowledge of the constantly evolving cancer management field. Noted oncology figures will lead the course designed for physicians who treat cancer, including general surgeons, medical and surgical oncologists and radiation oncologists.
The three half-day didactic sessions, will cover patient management, specifically for patients undergoing cancer therapies. In addition, the course faculty will present the most up to date information regarding multidisciplinary management of several common cancers, such as pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer and even mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is a cancer in which malignant cells develop in the lining of the chest, abdomen, or heart and is often caused by airborne asbestos exposure. It is typically treated with mesothelioma surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or a combination of the three. However, treatments for this type of cancer often only slightly delay the cancer’s development, as it is a highly aggressive, rapidly progressing disease.
The post-diagnosis survival rate for mesothelioma disease is highly unfavorable, usually around six to eighteen months and rarely longer. Because of its quick and extremely destructive nature, scientists and doctors in various mesothelioma clinics throughout the country are searching for alternative, more effective treatments.
The aims of the Multidisciplinary Management of Cancer course are to both update physicians’ knowledge on current treatment options for various cancers, as well as to promote awareness of ongoing research and new techniques in the detection and treatment of malignant diseases. Specific topics and faculty in the course include:
Multidisciplinary Management of Lung Cancer with Drs. Andrew C. Chang and Gregory P. Kalemkerian
Emerging Therapeutic Targets for Cancer Treatment with Dr. Ann F. Schott
Head and Neck Cancer with Dr. Gregory P. Kalemkerian
Surgery and Immunotherapy in Melanoma with Dr. Vincent M. Cimmino
Advances in Loco-Regional Therapy of Breast Cancer with Drs. Tara M. Breslin and Reshma Jagsi
Health Care Reform and Cancer Treatment again with Dr. Tara M. Breslin.
The will be a multitude of opportunities for participating physicians to engage in one-on-one conversations with the course faculty, and a question and answer session will be led each day by a panel of experts to discuss complicated clinical issues. Participants will leave the course with updated knowledge on treatment options, including surgical, adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapies and management of metastatic disease, as well as a familiarity with research that may greatly impact future malignant disease management and therapy.
Full course fees for physicians are $365 and $195 for physicians in training, allied health, nurses and retired physicians. This fee includes breakfast, refreshments, lunch and educational materials.
