Catalogers, direct mail and the economic slump

Direct Marketer gives tips to catalogers in tough economic times.

PostcardMania CEO, Joy Gendusa, has been advising catalogers since the postage rates rose last May that they should start marketing with postcards to cut costs while at the same time garnering more business than their competitors.

Gendusa says successful catalogers use postcards to market, like — like JC Penny, Spiegel, and Brighton.  She went on to say that postcards work because they are inexpensive and get the attention of the prospective buyer who might like to shop in a particular catalog.

“It’s at these times you have to be smarter. You have to market smarter and reach higher quantities of people with your marketing message,” says Gendusa.

Gendusa gives tips for catalogers to help them come out ahead during any economic slump.  They are:

·         Market like crazy – pick up the customers your competitors will lose by cutting their marketing budgets;

·         The trick with postcards is to advertise on your postcard ONE of your best selling items and mail it to your prospective buyer list.

·         Design another postcard with another one of your best selling items and mail it to the same list one to two weeks later.

·         Do the same again and again for about four to five postcards.

·         Make an offer on your postcard, like, you will send them a catalog for free and 10% off their first order if they order within 30 days of ordering their catalog.

·         Send the same rotation of postcards mailed out every one to two weeks.  Those recipients that didn’t order your catalog the first time, might subsequent times.

·         Look for terms where you can pay for your marketing when your income starts rolling in – this staves off the bite of having to spend money before the sales come in;

·         And don’t “agree” — don’t buy into the fact that you can’t control your business’ outcome.

To continue to help catalogers, PostcardMania has decided to exhibit at the 25th Annual ACCM Tradeshow — the largest conference for catalog, internet and multichannel merchants — May 19-22 in Orlando, FL.
