Madonna Shows Malawi Documentary At Tribeca Film Festival

The plight of poverty-stricken Malawi is addressed in a harrowing new documentary produced and narrated by Madonna.

The film, “I Am Because We Are,” premiered to a packed audience at the Tribeca Film Fesitval that included Rosie O’Donnell and Natalie Portman.

Afterwards, Madonna and director Nathan Rissman answered questions from the audience including one from a filmgoer who asked what the federal government could do to help change the deplorable conditions in Malawi.

“It’s our own job to change that and I think it’s a fools errand to rely on the government to change things,” she responded, urging people to volunteer.

Madonna, whose adoption of a toddler she met while filming two years ago has not been approved, was also asked about the difficulties in adopting children from Malawi. She commented that the concept of adoption was a new one in Malawi, and “consequently it’s very very time consuming,” she said. “I guess if you really want to do it you have to be willing to walk through fire.”

The same could be said for getting the documentary into theaters as Madonna said she was still looking for a distribution deal for the film. “Fingers crossed, that will be happening soon.”
