LeBron James Accused of Quitting on the Cavs

Cavaliers Owner Criticizes LeBron

Just after announcing that he will be joining the Miami Heat, 2-time NBA MVP LeBron James is already receiving outspoken criticism in reaction to his decision. According to a report from ESPN.com, Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert said in a phone interview with the Associated Press that James quit on the Cavs during the 2010 playoffs. "He quit," Gilbert said. "Watch the tape. The Boston series was unlike anything in the history of sports for a superstar... Go back and look at the tape. How many shots did he take?" The accusation, even if it is true (which seems unlikely), seems bitter to no end, apparently a reflection of Gilbert's unhappiness with the way James allegedly behaved prior to his highly anticipated announcement on Thursday night. According to Gilbert, James did not return a single phone call or text since the season ended. Gilbert also claims that the Cavaliers did not know of James' decision until James was already on the air telling the rest of the country. In an apparent attack on James' hope to win an NBA Finals title with the Heat, Gilbert said in a letter posted on the Cavaliers website, "I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER 'KING' WINS ONE." In the end, even if some of Gilbert's accusations are true, there is very little force behind the claim that LeBron has in any way betrayed Cleveland. After all, he gave Cleveland seven amazing years, two of which earned him NBA MVP titles. He may have not won an NBA Finals title for Cleveland, but doesn't James ultimately deserve to win a Finals title wherever he pleases? "Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us," wrote Gilbert, presuming to speak on behalf of all Cavaliers fans. Well, one thing is at least clear. Someone is bitter.
