U.S. and Russia Complete Spy Swap Deal

The United States and Russia have completed a spy swap deal that involved multiple agents operating for a number of countries.

As part of the deal the U.S. sent ten Russian agents to Vienna while Russia sent four prisoners who had been detained on espionage charges. Prior to their deportation, the ten Russian agents had admitted in a New York courtroom that they had been operating as agents for a foreign country.

All ten of those agents appeared together in that New York courtroom where prosecutors accused them of carrying out operations involving the infiltration of policy-making circles to collect information. Those operations, said prosecutors, were ordered by Russia’s External Intelligence Service (SVR).

Both the United States and Russia wanted to put the issue to rest as quickly as possible, hoping the matter wouldn’t disturb their recent efforts to stabilize their relationship.
