UN Security Council Condemns Sinking of South Korean Ship, Falls Short of Blaming North Korea

The UN Security Council has unanimously condemned the March sinking of the South Korean warship Cheonan but fell short of blaming North Korea for torpedo strike that left 46 sailors dead.

Pyongyang has insisted it played no role in the attack and warned that any allegations that insinuated otherwise would be met with military action. South Korea has openly blamed the North for the attack, pointing to a wide-range of evidence that was gathered shortly after the sinking.

While the UN said there was “deep concern” over those findings and the March 26 attack endangered “peace and security in the region and beyond” they appeared to be swayed by North Korea’s adamant stance of innocence.

The UN Security Council’s failure to directly blame North Korea for the attack was seen as a concession to China which expressed hesitation in the accusation. That hesitation is seen more as a fear of a possible North Korean strike rather than any doubt of their guilt in the attack.
