Guinea has postponed its July 18 presidential run-off to give the Supreme Court more time to investigate allegations of fraud.
The run-off was scheduled following a first round of voting on June 27 that failed to produce a clear majority for any of the candidates. While no candidate surpassed the 50% threshold former Prime Minister Cellou Dalein Diallo secured 40%, a sizeable advantage over opposition leader Alpha Conde who gained 21%.
Both men are trying to become the first democratically elected president in the country since it gained independence from France in 1958.
Guinea had been under the control of Gen. Lansana Conte for more than two decades until his death in Dec. 2008. Since that time Guinea has been ruled by a military junta but the interim leader General Sekouba Konate vowed to turn the country back over to civilian rule.
