San Diego Beaches Remain Closed after Shark Attack Kills Triathlete

Authorities have closed beaches stretching from San Diego along the Pacific coast to Carlsbad following Friday’s fatal shark attack that left a 66-year-old triathlete dead and experts surmising a great white was in the area.

David Martin had been swimming in the waters of Solana Beach on Friday when the shark attacked. Martin suffered deep lacerations on his legs and by the time rescuers could get him to land he had died.

The rare shark attack has led to a concentrated effort by officials to scan the ocean for what is believed to be a 12 to 17-foot great white shark.

City and county officials have said they would patrol the beaches over the weekend in an effort to keep people out of the waters but some of those officials have indicated they wouldn’t be arresting people for entering the water but would certainly talk with them.
