San Diego County reopened the beaches along the Pacific coast on Monday morning after officials could find no evidence that the shark that killed triathlete David Martin early Friday was still in the waters.
Martin was killed while swimming with a group of triathletes in the waters of Solana Beach. Witnesses said he had been lifted out of the water by a shark believed to be about 15-feet long. The shark bit Martin across both legs, leaving sever puncture wounds that proved to be fatal.
By the time Martin was brought to the shore he had bled to death, becoming just the second person to die in a shark attack in San Diego County since 1994.
For three days officials kept the beaches closed while they searched for the great white but by Monday morning they believed the shark had left the area.
