Gusting winds took a relatively calm wildfire in Sierra Madre, California and morphed it into a serious threat to more than 1,000 homes but fire crews managed to keep the flames from reaching the neighborhoods.
With the danger still present all Sierra Madre schools were cancelled on Monday. The wildfire has charred more than 500 acres since it began on Saturday.
Firefighters have said they have the wildfire 30 percent contained but the unpredictable winds could turn the blaze into something greater.
The fire began in the foothills of the Sierra Madre and has crept closer to Los Angeles over the past two days. Officials have said they hope to contain the fire within four to seven days.
