70 Dead, Hundreds Injured in China Train Accident

A least 70 people were killed and hundreds injured after two passenger trains collided in China’s Shandong province on Monday.

The accident happened at 4:43 a.m. in the city of Zibo. One train was leaving Beijing and heading to Qingdao when it derailed and crashed into a train that was traveling from Yantai to Xuzhou.

Passengers say many of them were asleep and others were already waiting in the aisle to get off the train when the crash occurred.

Government officials say they do not suspect terrorism in the crash. Villagers helped police officers and medical workers pull bodies and survivors from the debris. At least 420 passengers were injured and 70 were dead.
