Ship Carrying Aid to Gaza Strip to Dock in Egypt

A ship attempting to carry supplies to the Gaza Strip will dock in Egypt after Israel reinforced its intention to prevent the vessel from breaking its blockade of the Palestinian territory.

The ship, chartered by the son of Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi, is flying a Moldovan flag and was to travel from a Greek port on Saturday directly to Gaza. Those plans changed as Israel’s Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman held talks with his Greek and Moldovan counterparts and came to agreement that the ship would dock in Egypt’s Egypt's el-Arish on the coast of the Sinai Peninsula.

Israel has also appealed to the UN to step in on the matter as their ambassador, Gabriel Shaley wrote in a letter “Israel calls upon the international community to exert its influence on the government of Libya to demonstrate responsibility and prevent the ship from departing to the Gaza Strip.”

Shaley went on to say “Israel reserves the right under international law to prevent this ship from violating the existing naval blockade on the Gaza Strip.”

While Israel has eased its blockade of the Gaza Strip, now allowing most consumer goods into the Palestinian territory, there remains a number of items that remain blacklisted.
