Majority of Teen Girls Taken From Polygamist Compound Have Had Children or Are Pregnant

53 teenaged girls between the ages of 14 and 17 were taken into state custody last week following the raid on a polygamist compound in Texas, and more than half have had children or are pregnant.

The raid was prompted by a series of calls to a domestic abuse hotline, reportedly from a 16-year-old girl on the compound who was being forced into a marriage with a man three times her age. Authorities are investigating whether the call was a hoax since the girl has not been found.

According to state officials, there was a pattern of teen girls being forced into “spiritual” marriages and sex with much older men.

Under Texas law, children under the age of 17 generally cannot consent to sex with an adult.

The compound is controlled by the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a sect lead by Warren Jeffs.
