The Zimbabwe High Court ordered the release of 200 opposition supporters on Tuesday, five days after several hundred were rounded up and arrested by police who stormed the headquarters of the opposition party Movement for Democratic Change as well as independent election headquarters.
During the raids police also seized election information from both headquarters, seemingly at the direction of President Robert Mugabe who is believed to have lost the presidential election to Morgan Tsvangirai.
A recount of the parliamentary elections showed that Mugabe’s ruling party ZANU-PF had lost majority and most believe that Tsvangirai captured enough of the votes to win the presidency yet that outcome has yet to be announced.
Fears have set in that Mugabe has delayed the election announcement so that he may mount a run-off campaign and hold on to power. Mugabe has held the office since Zimbabwe won its independence in 1980.
