A new study involving nearly 39,000 women finds the ‘fit but fat’ theory to be a dangerous one. According to the study appearing Monday in the Archives of Internal Medicine, weight does matter.
Researchers have long debated whether exercise or weight has a greater influence on the risk of heart disease.
The ‘fit but fat’ study helped researchers sort out the combined effects of physical activity and body mass on a woman’s chance of developing heart disease.
Studies showed that while exercise can reduce the risk of heart problems, the chances for cardiovascular problems remains great for overweight or obese women.
Women age 50 and older have a 2 in 5 risk for heart attacks or developing other cardiovascular problems.
