In many of the cases, detectives have found a smiley face painted somewhere at the crime scene. While the size of the face and the color of paint have varied, police concluded the smiley face is a signature claiming responsibility for the death.
And with multiple victims on the same nights in different locations, investigators have also concluded that more than one person is involved in the killings.
FBI officials have said the string of deaths are unrelated and not the work of a “smiley face gang.”
