6-Year Old Girl Thrown Into Fire In India; Violence Motivated by Caste

Authorities in northern India reported the arrest of a man accused of throwing a little girl into a fire claiming she was trespassing. The attack was apparently motivated by caste.

The 6-year old is a member of the dalit – the lowest caste in India – once considered “untouchable.” Her attacker, 22-year old Madan Singh, is reportedly a member of a higher caste. Police have said they will investigate whether Singh’s attack was motivated by the girl’s caste.

A complex hereditary system still divides Hindus into castes, and even though the system was outlawed more than sixty years ago, those at the bottom of the caste today face discrimination.
