Rangers' Sean Avery In Hospital After Cardiac Arrest, Lacerated Spleen

New York Rangers start Sean Avery remains in intensive care Wednesday after suffering a cardiac arrest and lacerated spleen.

Avery suffered a cardiac arrest while being rushed to St. Vincent's Medical Center. The cardiac arrest was in response to lacerated spleen Avery suffered in a collision during a playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

After a CT scan, doctors identified the lacerated spleen, which will end Avery's season. Avery is recovering from his cardiac arrest, which is a severe heart attack, in Manhattan's St. Vincent's hospital.

The collision occurred in the first-period after Avery hit a Pittsburgh defenseman.

Avery was hospitalized after the Rangers lost to the Penguins in a Stanley Cup playoff game at Madison Square Garden, which put New York down 3-0 in the best of seven series.

Avery was traded to the Rangers from the Los Angeles Kings last year. While in Los Angeles, Avery became known for dating several celebrities, including Rachel Hunter and Elisha Cuthbert.

In March, Avery drove New Jersey Devils goalie Martin Brodeur crazy by face-guarding the goalie during the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. The incident caused NHL officials to institute a new penalty, known as the "Avery Rule".

Avery, the six-year veteran with a $1.9 million salary, came to the Rangers in a five-player February 2007 deal. In just 29 games, he led the team in penalty minutes.
