Water Service, Inc. is a non-operating holding company, whose income is derived
from the earnings of its four wholly owned subsidiary companies. The Company's
business is divided into three segments: Water Activities, Real Estate
Transactions, and Services and Rentals. The Water Activities segment consists
of the Company's core regulated water activities to supply public drinking
water to its customers. It is conducted through Connecticut Water Company
(Connecticut Water), the Company's largest subsidiary and a regulated water
company. Real Estate Transactions segment involves the sale or donation for
income tax benefits of its real estate holdings. The Services and Rentals
segment provides contracted services to water and wastewater utilities and
other clients and also leases certain of its properties to third parties
through the Company's unregulated companies.
