Zimbabwe Likely to Face Run-off Between Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai

Following the recent recount by Zimbabwe’s government it is likely the presidential election will head to a run-off between incumbent Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai.

Mugabe has held office since Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980 but the leader has faced growing criticism from his citizens as the country has faced an economic collapse and been subjected to rising violence.

Last month’s presidential election showed Tsvangirai earned 47 percent of the vote compared to 43 percent won by Mugabe yet because there was no majority a run-off is necessary.

Tsvangirai, head of the Movement for Democratic Change, has accused Mugabe of rigging the vote and has said the delays will only increase bloodshed. Tsvangirai has said he would not participate in a run-off because Mugabe would only produce fraudulent results.
