A bill banning companies from using genetic information to make insurance or job decisions was passed by Congress on Thursday.
The measure will deter health insurance companies from using genetic information like a person’s predisposition for cancer or diabetes to make determinations on enrollment eligibility or in setting premiums.
Companies would also be prevented from using a person’s genetic information in decisions involving employment.
One lone member of Congress voted against the bill, which passed a House vote yesterday 414 to 1 after it passed last week in the Senate 95 to 0.
The bill is expected to be signed into law by President Bush.
The measure comes as a relief to physicians whose patients have had to refuse genetic testing for fear of discrimination in their health insurance.
