Barbara Walters admitted that she had an affair with married U.S. Senator Edward Brooke, according to a transcript of The Oprah Winfrey Show on Thursday.
Walters said her affair with Brooke, the Massachusetts senator, lasted through the 1970s, but kept it quiet because it could have ruined both of their careers.
Walters' interview on The Oprah Winfrey Show is set to air Tuesday, in which she will describe her relationship with Brooke.
Sen. Brooke later divorced, and has since remarried to his current wife, Amy.
Brooke was the first African American to be elected by popular vote to the U.S. Senate and the first African American elected since Reconstruction.
Walters, who has been divorced twice, also discussed her new memoir, "Audition," which covers her long career in television, as well as her off-camera life.
