Deborah Jeane Palfrey, best known as the "D.C. Madam", was found dead Thursday after committing suicide at her mother's house in Florida.
Palfrey hanged herself near her mother's home in Tarpon Springs. Her mother found her in a shed, hanging from rope tied to the ceiling.
Two suicide notes were found near her body.
Palfrey, 52, became known as the "D.C. Madam" during her federal trial and eventual conviction in April in connection with a prostitution ring that served prominent politicians in Washington, D.C. One of her clients was Sen. David Vitter (R-La.).
Palfrey said she only ran an escort service and denied she knew that her women had sex with clients for money. Palfrey ran her escort service, Pamela Martin and Associates, for 13 years.
Palfrey faced 57 to 71 months in prison. She was free pending her sentencing July 24.
Blanche Palfrey had no sign that her daughter was suicidal, and there was no immediate indication that alcohol or drugs were involved.
One of Palfrey's escort service employees was former University of Maryland, Baltimore County, professor Brandy Britton, who was arrested on prostitution charges in 2006. Britton, who was known as Alexis Angel in the service, committed suicide in January by hanging herself right before she was scheduled to go to trial.
When Britton was found dead, Palfrey said, "I guess I'm made of something that Brandy Britton wasn't made of."
Due to the novelty of her suicide and the power of her black book, there have been conspiracy theories floating around, claiming that Palfrey might have been killed by someone.
