Barge Accident on Mississippi Shuts Down Two Bridges Between Iowa and Illinois

Car and rail traffic between Iowa and Illinois has been shut down after five barges broke loose and slammed into two bridges over the Mississippi River.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, three of the barges hit the U.S. Highway 34 bridge, with one continuing downstream to strike the BNSF railroad bridge.

A spokesperson with the Iowa Department of Transportation indicated that water levels on the Mississippi, which is at 20.61 feet and rising, have hindered inspections of the two bridges.

Both bridges remain closed pending inspections.
