Swiss Authorities Reject U.S. Extradition Request for Roman Polanski

Swiss authorities have rejected a U.S. extradition request for famed film director Roman Polanski, opting instead to declare 76-year-old a free man following several months under house arrest.

Polanski had been the subject of an international warrant since he fled the United States in 1978 following a conviction on charges of unlawful sex with a minor. He pled guilty to that charge but before he could be sentenced he left the country and took refuge in France.

In September Polanski left France and travelled to Switzerland to pick up a lifetime achievement award at the Zurich Film Festival but while in the country he was detained by authorities. He was originally placed in prison but in December he was moved to his chalet and held under house arrest.

On Monday his fate was finally determined by a Swiss court which said it would declare Polanski a free man due to the inability on the part of the United States to provide confidential testimony concerning the director’s original sentencing procedure.
