NHRA drag racer Mark Niver was killed Sunday while racing
near Seattle. Niver crashed after the parachutes on his car “ripped off.” He was
unable to stop and hit a net. Niver was 60.
“NHRA and Pacific Raceways officials extend their deepest
sympathies to the entire Niver family. Niver was a racer’s racer. For most of
his career, he not only drove but built his dragsters and machined his engines
and components. His talent on the race track and in the machine shop was
superseded only by his kindness and willingness to help other racers,” NHRA
said in a statement on their Web site.
Niver raced for more than 40 years. He won the O’Reilly
Summer Nationals in 2008.
