Infants Dropped 50 Feet in Maharasthra

Couples released their infant children from a 50 foot tower in the Indian state Maharashtra in observance of a 500 year old ritual.  The children’s parents take a vow at the Bab Sheikh Umer Saheb to do so, believing that the fall will strengthen the child.

Local residents claim that no injuries have ever occurred from the practice.

Observed by Muslims and Hindus, the ritual happens every year.

Jayashree, the mother of one of the children dropped claims, “If you do this, it is good for the child…They become healthy.  It is to get the blessings of God.  The babies are between nine months and 11 months old or sometimes are of even less age.”
