Spain Wins 2010 World Cup
Spain Wins First World Cup Title
On Sunday, Spain won the 2010 World Cup by defeating the Netherlands 1-0. With less than 7 minutes left in the second half of overtime, Andres Iniesta made the single goal that granted Spain its first ever World Cup title. "We have all done an incredible job," said Iniesta after the historic victory. "I don't think we even realize what we have done." Spain fans were clearly outnumbered in the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg, where the game was played, but a roar of cheering and vuvuzuelas could definitely be heard when the referee blew the final whistle of the game. Unfortunately, there has been some controversy and criticism surrounding the game, because referee Howard Webb handed out an unprecedented total of 14 yellow cards, 10 of which were given to Dutch players. According to ESPN.com, the 14 cards are the most ever in a finals and the third-most in any game from 1970. While some of the cards were merited, the constant barrage of yellow cards could not have had a very desirable effect on the flow of the game. One dutch player, John Heitinga, was even ejected from the game after receiving his second yellow card during overtime. Arjen Robben, the feared Dutch offensive man, said, "For me, it is very clear -- that after such a game when you sit in the dressing room there is only talking about the referee, and I think that's a bad point. If you play a World Cup final, you need a world-class referee. I don't know if today was a world-class performance from the referee." Netherlands goal keeper Maarten Stekelnburg went so far as to say, "We don't have the cup, and that's the reason why we're here. You can blame the referee." Even if the criticisms of Webb are valid, this is a great time for Spain. They worked hard and they have finally won the World Cup. (Sources: ESPN.com)
