Zimbabwe Election Results Released; Tsvangirai and Mugabe Face Run-Off

Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has insisted that he captured enough votes in Zimbabwe’s presidential election to avoid a run-off but official numbers were released on Friday that indicated the Movement for Democratic Change leader received 47.9 percent of the vote while current president Robert Mugabe tallied 43.2 percent.

Because neither man received a majority there will be a run-off, something Tsvangirai is adamantly opposed to and insists it will just be a way for Mugabe to steal the election.

Tsvangirai has said he would not participate in a run-off but if he refuses Mugabe will assume control of the presidency once more. Mugabe has held power since 1980, the year Zimbabwe gained independence from Britain.
