Ling Ling The Panda Dies at 22

The only giant panda owned by Japan has died. Ling Ling the panda died at the age of 22 on Wednesday. He was 70-years-old in human years.

Ling Ling was born in the Beijing Zoo in 1985. He was given to Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo in 1992. Ling Ling was traded by China in exchange for a Japanese-born panda. The exchange represented the 20th anniversary of peace between China and Japan.

Japan’s prime minister said he has asked China to lease more pandas. China only leases the animals because they are endangered.

“We have already made such a request through diplomatic channels. I hear that everybody used to visit the zoo for a glimpse of pandas. I believe it would be great if the zoo had them,” said Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda.
