China opened up the Hangzhou Bay Bridge, the longest trans-oceanic bridge in the world, on Friday.
Known as the "world's longest sea bridge", the Hangzhou Bay Bridge extends 22 miles, connecting Jiaxing city near Shanghai to the port city of Ningbo in the eastern province of Zhejiang.
It is slightly shorter than the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge in Louisiana, which is still considered the world's longest bridge. The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge, which extends 23.67 miles, connects the Louisiana cities of Metairie and Mandeville while it crosses over the lake.
The Hangzhou Bay Bridge, which cost $1.7 billion dollars, cuts the length of the road trip from Shanghai to Ningbo by 120 kilometers. The bridge has six expressway lanes in two directions.
Construction of the Hangzhou Bay Bridge started on June 8, 2003.
