According to the Pentagon, Sgt. Merlin German, known as the “Miracle Marine,” died on April 11, 2008 following surgery to graft skin onto his lip. German was 22-years-old
German had sustained severe burns to 97 percent of his body when he was struck by a roadside bomb while serving in Iraq on Feb. 22, 2005. In the blast German lost his fingers and left his face badly scarred. Not expected to survive, the former turret gunner endured more than 40 surgeries and had to learn to walk again.
Throughout his rehabilitation German not only remained positive but inspired others around him as he started his own charity, Merlin’s Miracles, designed to aid child burn victims. German had been stationed at Camp Pendleton in California but was at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio when he died.
