George Steinbrenner, Owner of New York Yankees, Dies at Age of 80

George Steinbrenner, owner of the New York Yankees, has reportedly died at the age of 80 after suffering a massive heart attack on Monday evening.

 

Steinbrenner was rushed to a Tampa hospital after suffering the heart attack at his home and had been listed in serious condition. By Tuesday morning the legendary baseball figure had passed and a statement was released by the family noting “It is with profound sadness that the family of George M. Steinbrenner III announces his passing. He passed away this morning in Tampa, Fla., at age 80.”

 

Steinbrenner had taken ownership of the New York Yankees in 1973 and under his watch the club collected 11 AL pennants and seven World Series titles. In 2007 he handed over the day-to-day operations of the team to his sons, Hal and Hank Steinbrenner.
