California Summer Camps Help Students Prep for College

SuperCamp's 10-day academic summer programs help students as young as 11 years old begin the college preparation process by sharpening their learning skills in the areas of reading comprehension, reading speed, creative writing, problem solving and critical thinking.

The program's teen summer camps help teens develop such life skills as communication, leadership, team building, and goal-setting.

SuperCamp runs California summer camps at Stanford in the Bay Area and Cal State San Marcos in San Diego County. Both locations offer programs for students entering grades 6-8 in the fall and those going into grades 9-12.

"Parents are enrolling their kids into our college prep camps because they know that college prep begins long before a student graduates from high school," says Bobbi DePorter, president of SuperCamp.

She goes on to say, "Many students found out the hard way that poor grades in their freshman or sophomore years hurt their chances getting into college because those bad grades dragged down their cumulative high school GPA."

By teaching all students who attend SuperCamp the 8 Keys of Excellence, a character-development program that is also taught in many schools around the country, SuperCamp facilitators are able to instill a sense of self-responsibility in the students. This trait is a major non-academic component of preparing for college.
