George Steinbrenner Dies at Age 80
Iconic Former NY Yankees Owner Passes Away
Baseball icon George Steinbrenner has passed away at the age of 80. The former New York Yankees owner died on Tuesday of a heart attack. The Steinbrenner family said in a statement, "It is with profound sadness that the family of George M. Steinbrenner III announces his passing. He passed away this morning in Tampa, Fla., at age 80... He was a visionary and a giant in the world of sports. He took a great but struggling franchise and turned it into a champion again." Steinbrenner, who was born on July 4, 1930, was well-known for being a demanding owner who helped to transform the Yankees into one of the greatest professional sports teams of all time. During his ownership of the team, the Yankees made 10 World Series appearances and won 3 straight championships from 1998 to 2000. Widely known by his nickname "The Boss", Steinbrenner established himself not only as one of the biggest figures in baseball but also as one of the most iconic figures in all of sports. New York Mets owners say, "George was a larger than life figure and a force in the industry. The rise and success of his teams on the field and in the business marketplace under his leadership are a testament to his skill, drive, and determination."
