French MPs Overwhelmingly Approve Measure to Ban Islamic Full Veil in Public

Members of France’s lower house of parliament have approved a measure that would ban the wearing of an Islamic full veil in public, a move that could produce similar results in other countries debating the issue.

The ban has received strong support from the public which was evidenced in the voting as 335 ballots cast backed the bill while just one was against. Many of the opposition Socialists in the 557-seat National Assembly abstained from voting.

With the measure passing in the lower house the bill will now travel to the Senate where it will be voted upon in September.

While the bill is expected to pass without much trouble critics of the ban have pointed out that it would only target a small minority of French Muslims who actually where the full veil.

The ban would likely result in a fine of 150 euros for women who break the law and a 30,000 euro fine and one-year jail sentence for men who force their wives to wear the veil in public.
