Passengers Aboard Cruise Ship being Evacuated after Vessel Runs Aground in Baltic Sea

Latvian authorities have begun to evacuate nearly 1,000 passengers and crew from a cruise ship that ran aground about 10 miles from the coast of Latvia in the Irbe Strait on Sunday.

The German-owned Mona Lisa had embarked from Kiel, Germany and had been destined for Latvia’s capital Riga when it ran into a sandbar. Attempts to dislodge the cruise ship have been unsuccessful, leading officials to begin evacuating the passengers.

Latvian Coast Guard officials have said the 747 passengers were not in danger and had access to clean water and food. Several of the 237-member crew would not be leaving the ship.
