People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have contacted the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority and requested the suspension of jockey Gabriel Saez. Saez was riding Eight Belles at Saturday’s Kentucky Derby when the filly broke both her front ankles after crossing the finishing line in second place. Eight Belles was euthanized on the track after it was determined there was nothing that could be done to save the horse.
Now PETA is saying Saez is to blame for Eight Belles’ death, claiming the horse had been injured prior to the finish yet he pushed the horse to the line causing the fatal accident. The animal rights organization has asked that Saez be suspended pending an investigation.
The 20-year-old Saez had been riding in his first Kentucky Derby.
