Mildred Loving Dies at 68

The woman responsible for sparking the acceptance of interracial marriage has died. Mildred Loving died Friday in her home at the age of 68, her daughter Peggy Fortune said Monday.

Loving challenged Virginia’s ban on interracial marriages in 1958 when she petitioned to marry Richard Loving, a white man. The U.S. Supreme Court allowed them to marry and struck down laws nationwide the prohibited mixed marriages.

“There can be no doubt that restricting the freedom to marry solely because of racial classifications violates the central meaning of the equal protection clause,” the Supreme Court ruled.

“I want (people) to remember her as being strong and brave yet humble – and believed in love,” Fortune said.
