While several thousand residents had already fled the small town of Chaiten in Chile the remaining townspeople were ordered to evacuate on Tuesday as the volcano that has threatened the town for the past five days grew more ominous.
Officials have now ordered the evacuation of the entire region as lava continued to flow and ash climbed as high as 12-miles high.
It has been estimated that the Chaiten volcano last erupted some 9,000 years ago.
