Georgia Prepares for First Execution Since Supreme Court Ruling

Officials in the state of Georgia are making preparations for the Tuesday night execution of a convicted killer who may become the first to be put to death since the Supreme Court halted such executions seven months ago.

53-year old William Earl Lynd is scheduled to be executed Tuesday at 7 p.m. for the 1988 kidnapping and shooting death of his live-in girlfriend.

The Supreme Court halted nationwide executions while it considered whether the practice of using a lethal injection of a three-drug cocktail violated the constitutional ban on cruel and unusual punishment. The high court ruled last month in a Kentucky case in favor of the lethal injection methods.

Georgia is one of three dozen states using a similar method.
