Time magazine has named three religious leaders to its list of most influential people.
In the May 12 issue of Time magazine, the Dalai Lama, the Rev. Richard Cizik and Bartholomew I have been named as leaders and revolutionaries.
A "Time 100" profile of the Dalai Lama attributes the influence of the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism to his profound happiness. Bartholomew I, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, is recognized for his attention to the environment.
Rev. Cizik, the leader of governmental affairs for the National Association of Evangelicals, was also noted for his environmental activism.
One notable religious leader who was absent from the “Time 100” list was Pope Benedict XVI. A papal spokesman reportedly claimed to be pleased the Pope wasn’t on the list, citing the criteria used in developing the list didn’t adequately recognize the pope’s spiritual or moral authority.
