Dina Matos McGreevey asked for $600,000 from ex-husband, former New Jersey Governor Jim, as they began divorce proceedings in court Tuesday.
In 2004, Jim McGreevey announced in a press conference that he was "a gay American" after acknowledging an affair with a male staffer who he said was trying to blackmail him. The ex-staffer said he was sexually harassed by the Democratic governor.
Matos McGreevey asked for $600,000 due to the amount of money lost due to her husband preemptively leaving his office as NJ governor.
McGreevey and his wife have been battling publicly for months about everything from his partner's financial assets to their daughter's birthday party.
The issues to be decided in the divorce settlement involve custody, alimony and child support, and whether McGreevey, now openly gay, committed fraud by marrying a woman.
The witness that will receive the most attention will be Teddy Pedersen. Pedersen, 29, is a former aide who claims he had regular three-way sexual encounters with the McGreeveys beginning when they were dating in 1999 and ending two years later, after they were married and McGreevey had been elected governor.
Matos McGreevey claimed publicly that Pedersen's claims did not happen. McGreevey affirmed Pedersen's statement, saying that they did.
